Fishing knives

We know that feeling when we go fishing and need to cut the fishing line, but there is nothing that will help us with it. Same thing happens when we need to fillet the fish. Just as with other sports and hobbies, fishing also deserves to have special equipment. One of them is special fishing knife. Maybe we have never thought that there are special fishing knives. However, it would be good to know how to choose such a knife to avoid dissapointment.

The basics

First think we think of when choosing a knife is the type - respectively whether it is a folding knife or fixed blade. With fishing knives the answer is simple - fixed blade. Of course we can use folding knife too, however, it will never be sufficient for specific tasks. We can use it to cut a fishing line or salami for a snack, but never for more precise work, that requires firm grip. Fixed blade knife is strong and durable. The handle should be shaped for firm and secure grip. We will be often "fighting" and dealing with the fish in the waters so we will need a knife for immediate action rather than waiting for lengthy opening. Another aspect will be the shape of the blade, which can always help us.

Thinner is better

For general cutting, cutting of branches and similar, we should be fine with any blade. But the shape of the blade is what makes it fishing knife. Do we know how the fillet knife looks like ? It has longer bevel with sharp point for puncturing. We do not necessarily need to take this knife with us when we go fishing as we can leave the filleting for when we get back home. Fishing knives don´t have thick blades with combo edges or serrated edges only. They are thinner. In a way, they resemble fillet knives, but the blade is made for using it even for more general tasks. As already mentioned, serrated blade is not really appropriate. It cuts better some materials, however, we will use it precisely for cutting a meat and serrated edge may do some damages to it. The combo edge is also not really appropriate as we will need the entire length of the blade. And what about corrosion ? What to do, when the knife is constantly in contact with water ?

The right selection as a basis of satisfaction

We finally got to the material. We need to realize that the knife will be in everyday contact with water. And the salt water is a real test for the material. Due to this fact, we need to focus on corrosion resistance. The cheaper blades don´t provide high corrosion resistance so watch for at least mid-class steel - Aus8, Aus6 and so on. Another important thing is the sheath. Leather or fabric sheath is not a good choice. The plastic sheaths are the best choice as they are water-resistant. Sheaths without locking system are great for quick draw as well as comfortable and secure carry. In our wide selection you can find knives specifically for fishing, all you need is just to choose the one that suits your needs.
