Simply, if you happen to be in a hostile environment where you do not have the time to even put your pack down, you can still re-fill your hydration reservoir using this reduction.
You can fill it via your drinking tube for example from a bottle or tap. The filling itself is very fast, you can fill about 1.5 litres of water in approximately 50 seconds.
