Softshell

The flexible softshell is perfect for changing weather conditions. You will appreciate it in a humid environment, as well as in wind and light rain. The advantage of the softshell is that it combines the benefits of several types of clothing (for example, a sweatshirt, jacket and windbreaker) and at the same time removes their disadvantages (for example, impermeability). In addition, more types of clothing in one means an overall lower weight.

Basic types of softshell

Membrane softshell

One type of softshell is a membrane softshell, which consists of several layers laminated together, which together form a single product. The top layer is usually made of polyurethane, which is water-repellent and snow does not stick to it. Between the outer and inner layers there is a membrane that better protects against the wind, ensures moisture removal from the body and waterproofness.

The next layer is insulating and is of varying thickness - depending on what purpose and weather the given piece of clothing is primarily intended for. It can be, for example, microfleece or thin knitwear. These two layers are often supplemented with additional membranes.

Woven softshell

In contrast to the membrane softshell is the woven softshell. This type of softshell consists of densely woven synthetic materials. It does not contain membranes and resistance to weather effects is ensured in this case by "micro-weaving". Woven softshell products are breathable, light and flexible. It is suitable whenever you expect to sweat a lot during your activity, but it is not suitable for adverse weather and winter conditions.

Reflective softshell

Although the armyshop assortment usually includes products that provide the wearer with the best possible camouflage, sometimes we need the exact opposite - to be seen well. Either because of a specific work activity, which already requires it by law, or because, for example, we are going to move around roads with reduced visibility. In this case, you will use a reflective softshell, which uses an outer reflective layer to ensure the highest possible visibility.

Which softshell to choose?

What activity are you going to do?

If you are deciding between membrane and woven softshell clothing, choose according to the activity for which you are going to use it primarily.

Choose a membrane softshell when you are planning, for example, ski mountaineering or (high) mountain tourism. It is not suitable for downright freezing conditions, but otherwise it can be your faithful companion practically all year round.

Thanks to its lower weight and elasticity, the woven softshell is more likely to be used for aerobic activities. However, it is not suitable for heavier rain, winter and adverse weather. Lower waterproofness compared to membrane.

Waterproofness

Waterproofing can vary significantly depending on the type of softshell: while a membrane can have a waterproofing of up to 30,000 mm of water column, it is usually only around 5,000 mm for a textile one.

Wind resistance

A softshell is generally windproof, but a membrane softshell is better in this respect. But it is redeemed by lower breathability compared to a woven softshell.

Breathability

Breathability is given in Ret values. The lower this value, the more breathable the fabric. If the value is less than 6, the breathability is very good, above 20, on the contrary, it is very bad. Products made of woven softshell lead in breathability.

How to maintain a softshell

Wash the softshell ideally in a washing powder intended for functional clothes. Avoid common washing powders, which can impair its properties. After washing and drying, impregnate with a suitable agent (ideally directly on the softshell).
