The head protection is one of the first protections ever invented. Many, many years ago people were already realising how important is to protect the head. The first helmet was a combat helmet. In ancient times, people knew very well how delicate the head is, so they decided to protect it in wars. The first helmets were made out of leather or bones. As the humans got to know the metals better, the helmets started to be produced from copper, iron or steel. After all this, we got here. So what do we have ?
Helmet as a perfect tool
The fact that the helmet is used in many industries only proves its importance. We know different sports helmets, bike helmets, motorcycle helmets, but above all military helmets that we find in this category. The purpose of the combat helmet is to protect the head against external influences -shocks and impacts, flying objects, etc. In addition, they should protect from bullets too. However, this might be a problem as some have speed 1200 m/s, which is good enough to get through even bulletproof vest. Therefore type of the helmet along with material play the key role.
Old type vs new type
The older military helmets were made from metal. It has proven itself when using lower calibers or as a protective device against impacts. But when using faster ammunition of larger caliber, these helmets were ineffective. In 1971 came material that was about to change everything. This material was Kevlar. It is an synthetic fiber that has great strength and durability in its modifications. Because of this, it found its way to the military industry, where its modifications of K129 and AP are used for ballistic purposes to produce ballistic vests and helmets. Thanks to the Kevlar, the modern ballistic helmets are much better than the old ones.
Onion
The composition of such a helmet is like onion. The outer surface is a material that can be well shaped, it is scratch resistant and often has an anti-shine finish. This material is usually plastic. Inside is a ballistic non -removable insert made from Kevlar, which protects from shrapnel and fragments. Another layer is padding, which main purpose is to ensure that the helmet sits comfortably on the head. We will often wear the helmet for several hours, so it is necessary that it fits naturally and comfortably. Adjustable retention system as well as chin strap will also help with that. With these, we get highly effective and durable protection that can often save a life.
